One of the components of the process of selecting students for the MBA program at MIM-Kyiv is entrance testing. The purpose of such tests is to measure the mathematical, analytical and verbal abilities of future students and to determine their ability to master the curriculum.
Format
The entrance test contains a list of questions that are divided into three sections: mathematical, analytical, and verbal. Testing lasts 125 minutes, respectively, in sections of 50, 40 and 35 minutes. There are two breaks of 5 minutes each between sections.
Each of the test questions is accompanied by four options of possible answers, of which only one is correct (multiple-choice questions). This format has limitations, as it does not allow measuring a person's ability to formulate his point of view, express himself conceptually, and use arguments "for" and "against". However, as practice shows, offering a large number of questions with multiple-choice answers to many people who differ in their life experience, the content of previously acquired education and directions of modern practical activity is a completely correct, honest and sufficiently effective and reliable means of measurement.
The time limit for completing test tasks is used to test the psychophysical qualities, discipline, and reactivity of the test participant's thinking.
Content With the help of an entrance test, the capabilities and skills that develop in a person over a relatively long time are measured. There are no tasks in the test, the answer to which requires knowledge of special educational courses or in-depth awareness in a particular field.
 
The mathematical section of the test tasks is aimed at measuring calculation capabilities, the ability to quickly perform operations with numbers, averages, percentages, navigate elementary graphs and geometric shapes, and find the correct algorithm in applied tasks.
Examples:
1. The arithmetic mean of A, B and C is equal to 20. What is the arithmetic mean of A and B if C = 8? 2. N students paid M hryvnias for studying at the institute. How many hryvnias should K students pay? 3. What is the area of a circle inscribed in a square with a diagonal of 8?
 
Analytical section contains tasks that test the ability to think consistently, provide data with a logically consistent interpretation, and reach correct conclusions within certain limitations.
 
Example: The chess coach has a team of five players at his disposal: A, B, C, G, and D. The team goes into each match with three players under the following restrictions: if the coach bet player B for the match, player A bet at the same time; if B plays in the current match, he misses the next match; in the next match, the coach uses no more than one player from those who played in the previous match. Question: If in the previous match the team played in the composition of A, B and B, then for the next match it can go out in the composition of: (A) A, B, D; (B) A, B, D; (C) A, G, D; (D) B, B, D; (E) A, B, C.
 
The verbal section of the entrance test reveals the ability to perceive textual information and find answers to the questions in the given texts. In addition, the section contains questions aimed at revealing language erudition and associative thinking.
Examples: 1. Choose the word that is as close as possible in meaning (synonym) to the word given in the question. Question: TEMPLATE. Answer: (A) benchmark; (B) standard; (C) form; (D) sample; (E) an example. 2. Choose a two-word connection that reflects exactly the connection contained in the question. Question: FILM – FILM. Answer: (A) radio loudspeaker; (B) TV antenna; (C) metal ore; (D) paper book; (E) a glass of water.
 
Rules and procedures Entrance testing is conducted according to the following rules: 1. Each test participant receives a corresponding invitation, which indicates the time and place (audience) of the entrance test. Entrance to the auditorium later than the specified time is prohibited. 2. The test participant must be prepared for the fact that the entrance test lasts a total of 135 minutes. During this time, all test participants remain in their seats in the classroom until the instructor announces that the test is complete. 3. Test takers must follow the instructions of the instructor conducting the entrance test.
Test results and their interpretation Individual indicators of the number of correct answers to test questions are brought to the attention of the members of the MIM-Kyiv Admissions Committee. The test participant has the right to receive information about personal test results from the Admissions Committee. No additional information about the results of the entrance test is provided. The results of the entrance test are used by the MIM-Kyiv Admissions Committee exclusively to resolve the issue of forming the MIM-Kyiv student body.
 
ENTRANCE EXAMINATION OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE For entrants to the MIM-Kyiv MBA program, the Department of Business English also conducts an entrance test, the purpose of which is to check the level of practical knowledge of the language. The level of English language proficiency is determined in order to further divide students into groups according to their level of English language proficiency. Format The entrance test consists of two stages. At the first stage, the applicant takes a computer test, the results of which determine the level of his knowledge of grammar and vocabulary. At the second stage, an interview is held, during which English communication skills are tested. Content The computer-based test consists of three sections containing 30, 30 and 40 questions, respectively. Each subsequent chapter is more difficult compared to the previous one. The test takes 60-90 minutes. The speed of execution depends on the level of knowledge of applicants. Each question is accompanied by four answer options, of which only one is correct (multiple choice). During the test, applicants are not allowed to use dictionaries or any other sources of information. The computer program determines the number of correct answers, which later serves as one of the indicators for determining the level of English language proficiency. During the interview, the applicant's ability to: - conduct a conversation on everyday, socio-political, economic and business topics, while demonstrating initiative, an evaluative attitude to the content of the conversation and a quick reaction to the interlocutor's remarks; - fully understand by ear information in English on business topics, presented at a normal speaking pace; - to understand the content of socio-political and professional texts.
Criteria for evaluating students' knowledge and skills by level
The level of knowledge is "perfect": a professional level that is as close as possible to the level of native speakers. "Lower perfect": fluency in spoken and written foreign language, fluent listening and quick reaction to the interlocutor's speech at a normal pace. "Higher average": free communication within professional topics with minor grammatical errors and lexical inaccuracies that do not interfere with the communication process. "Average": adequate expression of thought with skillful use of learned grammar and vocabulary within the curriculum. Adequate reaction to the speech of the teacher, as well as the native speaker at a slow pace. "Lower average": the communication process is adequately ensured, but with limited use of language structures and a significant number of errors. "Higher elementary": significant grammatical errors and stylistic inconsistency of vocabulary, which significantly complicates the communication process. Difficulty listening to a text in a foreign language. "Initial": a limited process of communication, which is regularly disturbed by the incorrect use of grammatical structures, lexical items, as well as inadequate pronunciation. Significant difficulties in listening at a slower pace.
