Over 300 applications, two cohorts and grants of up to €3,000: MIM Business School has launched the Veteran Business School.

One participant runs an apiary and wants to grow it. Several veterans are farming Australian red claw crayfish together. Another participant dreams of opening a bookshop café for mothers and children. These were among the stories shared on 26 and 27 October 2026, when learning began at the Veteran Business School, the educational component of the “Support for Veterans’ Reintegration in Ukraine” programme.
In September, MIM Business School and the Ukrainian Red Cross announced the call for applications, and the Veteran Business School received more than 300 of them. Following interviews, two cohorts were formed: one for the Vinnytsia region and one for the Mykolaiv region. Participants include veterans as well as the wives, mothers and fathers of defenders. Some are rebuilding businesses that the war brought to a halt. Others are registering as entrepreneurs for the first time.
The programme is implemented by the Ukrainian Red Cross with the support of the Danish Red Cross and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark.
“For the Danish Red Cross, as for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, this is the first project aimed specifically at veterans and their families,” said Oleksandr Kovalenko, Crisis Response Coordinator at the Danish Red Cross.
MIM delivers the learning component. For almost two months, participants attend online sessions twice a week, three hours each time, totalling more than 40 hours. The course runs from choosing a legal structure and a business model to financial planning, marketing, risk management and contracts. One session covers how to calculate a break-even point. Another covers how to avoid a cash gap when orders are coming in but payment arrives later.
“A business school is not a traditional university. This is a completely different kind of knowledge: you learn something today, and tomorrow you go and put it into practice,” said Oleksii Vynogradov, Acting President of MIM Business School.
Throughout the course, each participant develops their own business plan and defends it before a panel at the end. Winners of the competition will receive grants of up to €3,000 to start, restore or grow their businesses, followed by mentoring and post-grant support. Representatives of the Ukrainian Red Cross advise the groups on grant support and donor requirements.
The people in the room are just as valuable as the curriculum. At the very first session, natural clusters emerged within the groups, including beekeepers and people working in retail. Participants immediately offered one another help, from advice on registering as a sole trader to legal questions specific to veterans. After the programme, they will join the MIM community. Over 37 years, it has brought together more than 8,500 alumni, who have access to business clubs and closed events.
We will report on the business plan defences and the winners separately.
The “Support for Veterans’ Reintegration in Ukraine” programme is implemented by the Ukrainian Red Cross with the support of the Danish Red Cross and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark. The learning component is delivered by the MIM Business School.

ReinforceUA

Professional expertise

Academy of Management President Christopher Tucci explained why AI is no death sentence for companies and how to rebuild a business model before the market does.

At its peak, Garmin’s automotive segment brought in $2.5 billion. Once navigation became a free smartphone feature, that figure fell to $500 million. Yet today the whole company earns over $7 billion, having moved early into aviation, marine, outdoor and fitness. Stories like this shaped the ReinforceUA lecture “How to Survive the Age of AI Change”, held online on 28 October 2026.
The speaker was Christopher Tucci, President of the Academy of Management, the world’s largest association of management scholars, and Professor at the University of Oxford and Imperial Business School. This season, MIM Business School runs ReinforceUA together with AOM. The session was moderated by Oleksii Vynogradov, Acting President of MIM Business School.
His central argument: process automation is necessary, but competitors copy it quickly, so it rarely creates lasting advantage. That comes from new products, services and business models. Law firm DLA Piper is a case in point. Despite predictions that AI would replace lawyers, its revenue grew between 2019 and 2025, profit per partner more than doubled and headcount keeps rising. The firm built its own private AI assistant, hires data scientists and AI policy experts, and turned its internal AI governance framework into a client product.
“I don’t think companies are doomed to failure. They can develop new products, services, processes, business models,” Professor Tucci stressed. His advice: address employees’ fear of redundancy head-on, experiment, and don’t wait for a crisis.
During the Q&A, he warned that today’s AI prices are subsidised and likely to rise. Automating everything and laying people off is therefore questionable even on purely economic grounds. On accountability, he noted that having AI apologise for a bad decision won’t be enough if someone is harmed.

Surviving AI Disruption

Gennadii Opanasiuk, a student of the SE MBA MIM programme, became the subject of a Forbes feature about Ukrainian entrepreneurs and executives who combined service in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine with running a business during the war.
Gennadii Opanasiuk, co-founder and CEO of ALATYR Group, voluntarily mobilized into the Armed Forces of Ukraine in February 2022. Despite his military service and direct participation in combat operations, he continued to take part in managing the company, which operates in the fields of development, construction, logistics, and distribution.
Today, ALATYR Group is not only continuing to grow but is also actively bringing veterans into the team and taking care of the people who have gone through this difficult path together with the company.
Gennadii's story is an example of responsible leadership, resilience, and dedication to one's work. It shows how Ukrainian entrepreneurs find opportunities to develop their businesses even in the hardest of times, while also contributing to the defense of the country.

Hrozinska

As has become tradition, the beginning of September for students in the MIM Business School’s Senior Executive MBA program kicked off with an off-campus training module in Zakarpattia. This year’s program, titled “Value Management: From Local Resources to the National Level”, was dedicated to exploring how companies in the region build sustainable ecosystems, work effectively with local resources, and enter national and international markets.
Myroslava Grozinska, Vice President for Academic Affairs at the MIM Business School:

“Today, Zakarpattia is a dynamic region with strong business potential and an unique energy. Our field trip has proven that the exchange of experiences among top managers, business founders, and our students gives rise to new ideas and partnerships. Such trips enrich the managerial worldview and confirm that the strength of Ukrainian business lies in resilience, unity, and a constant drive for development.”

Over the course of three eventful days, the students immersed themselves in exploring the region’s diverse business models. The educational tour began with a visit to the new fractionation plant of the biotechnology company Biopharma PLASMA in Uzhhorod. With a history spanning more than 125 years, the company specializes in collecting blood plasma and manufacturing highly effective immunobiological drugs that save the lives of millions of people.
Next, MIM alumnus Vasyl Yabryk warmly welcomed the attendees at his modern agricultural enterprise, Faino Fruit, which specializes in the commercial cultivation, storage, and processing of pome and stone fruits.
The introduction to the hospitality industry continued at the Apartel Kosyno —an innovative recreational real estate development that successfully combines the concept of an aparthotel with the resort infrastructure of thermal springs.
A highlight of the module was a visit to Stakhovsky Wines, a boutique winery founded by legendary Ukrainian tennis player Serhiy Stakhovsky. Starting in 2015 by leasing 20 hectares of land and painstakingly restoring the soil and vineyards, the team harvested its first crop in 2018. Today, the winery produces premium terroir wines using traditional methods, and its collection features the “Ace by Stakhovsky” line (Merlot, Saperavi, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zweigelt) and the “W by Stakhovsky” line (Traminer, Chardonnay, Riesling Orange). A detailed tour and tasting were held for the session participants.
The module’s program harmoniously combined training, business visits, and informal networking. The participants of the off-site session also shared their impressions of the trip.
Maksym Shapovalov, architect and owner of the architectural firm “ZODCHI”:

“Together with my fellow students, we visited a number of companies and spoke with partners on a wide variety of topics. To be honest, I didn’t expect much from the trip at first, but the result pleasantly surprised me: the visit turned out to be extremely productive. Entrepreneurs—even those from related or completely different industries—openly shared their experiences, and many of their management decisions can easily be applied in my field as well—architectural design and construction. Communication flowed so easily that we even organized additional meetings at 7:30 or 8:00 a.m. outside the official schedule, eager to exchange experiences. My expectations were definitely exceeded: I made countless new connections, gained a fresh perspective on business challenges, and saw how the regional characteristics of Zakarpattia influence even standardized business processes.”

Ilona Koval, Deputy Chair of the Board for Legal Affairs at Meest Group:

“What stood out most was the business dinner with Tetyana and Serhiy Shelest (SHEMAX). It was a lively, candid account of how to start a business from scratch for the second time—about relocation, setting up production under new conditions, and entering international markets. The entrepreneurs spoke openly about the challenges they faced and the missteps that ultimately led them to success, transparency, and maximum automation. The second highlight was a visit to “Biopharma PLASMA.” We were able to tour the entire plant as construction was nearing completion, including areas that will be off-limits to visitors once operations begin. The scale and social significance of this business are truly impressive. Overall, the trip turned out to be surprisingly well-rounded: over the course of three days, we immersed ourselves in biotechnology, agriculture, winemaking, and industrial production, gaining truly valuable experience among like-minded people.”

Summarizing the visit to Zakarpattia, Myroslava Grozinska noted:

“For the MIM Business School, practical experience and immersion in a real-world business context have always been—and remain—key elements of the learning process. During this year’s field trip to Zakarpattia, our students explored how local projects, unique expertise, and regional potential are transformed into successful national and international projects. The practical experience of the companies we met demonstrates that modern Ukrainian business is capable not only of adapting to challenges but also of building highly effective, sustainable ecosystems and entering new markets.”

Gaining hands-on experience with regional businesses directly at company sites is becoming a cherished tradition for MIM. The business school extends its sincere gratitude to the Board of Zakarpattia business community for their warm welcome, and to all partners and host companies for their openness, support, and valuable practical experience.

No ties, just learning: MIM Business School’s SE MBA off-campus module

Tykhomyrova

In August 2026, Philadelphia hosted the 86th annual meeting of the Academy of Management—one of the world’s largest events in the field of management, bringing together over 9,000 scholars and experts.
The sole representative from Ukraine was Iryna Tykhomyrova, chair of the International Advisory Board and head of the Department of Management and Economics at the MIM Business School:

“This is an opportunity to be directly involved in the birth of modern science.”

For MIM, participating in the conference was not only an exchange of knowledge but also the foundation for new international partnerships: the development of the DBA program with the involvement of international expert support, joint research projects, and agreements to host Academy of Management seminars in Ukraine. This experience provided a powerful impulse for MIM’s strategic development and the formulation of plans for the 2026–2027 academic year. Stay tuned for our announcements, and join us in building a strong and visible Ukraine on the international academic stage.

MIM on the Global Stage of Management

The MIM Business School held the official opening of the third cohort of the Women Leadership Program — a joint initiative of MIM and the Institute for Management Development (IMD, Lausanne, Switzerland), the world's №1 business school in Executive Education according to the Financial Times.
In total, the admissions committee received 600 applications, and 270 were selected to participate in the competition. All candidates went through two stages of evaluation: first by the Ukrainian side, and then by the Swiss committee.
Since its founding, the program has been aimed at developing women leaders in business, the public sector, government administration, and veteran entrepreneurship. At the same time, this year saw a significant increase in participation from the business sector, reflecting an important trend: business is seeking to be more engaged in public initiatives and to take an active part in the reconstruction of Ukraine. This became possible thanks to the synergy of the MIM Business School and IMD, as well as the support of the Responsible Reconstruction Fund.
The participants were greeted by Oleksii Vynogradov, Acting President of the MIM Business School:

"The goal of the Women Leadership Program was formulated as support for the growing role of women in leadership in Ukrainian business, in public service, and in local self-government bodies. We strive to give these changes a structured character, depth, and an international dimension.
We have met you at a moment when leadership in Ukraine is of decisive importance. Now, when many men are serving in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and defending the country, it is women who take on responsibility for the development of business, communities, and more. This program exists to support women leaders and to give them a clear structure, depth of action, and international practices adapted to our realities. Today we have gathered within the walls of the MIM Business School to begin this journey.
What makes this experience special for each of you? You are becoming part of a community where everyone gains invaluable experience working alongside fellow participants, examines real cases, and takes personal responsibility for the decisions made for the sake of their own development and the development of the country. So let's begin!"

The greetings were joined by Iryna Tykhomyrova, who launched the two previous cohorts and now Heads the International Advisory Board. She called on the participants to perceive the program as a deep educational experience with new opportunities and responsibilities and reminded them of the final stage in December — the defense of their own projects.
Olena Kondratiuk, Deputy Chairwoman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, also offered her guidance to the participants:

"I congratulate the women leaders of the new intake of the Women Leadership Program, who, in conditions of absolute uncertainty, continue to create new opportunities, lead communities, and develop business. This course is not only about knowledge, but also about building connections, mutual support, and mentorship that will stay with you for life. May this program reveal your colossal potential and help strengthen the voice of Ukraine on the international stage."

Representatives of the Swiss side also took part in the event: Simon J. Evenett, Christine Batruch, and Joshua Clarke. They noted the importance of local leadership and spoke about the evolution of the course, emphasizing its purely practical, intensive character. The program is oriented toward the participants' real projects, coaching, a blended learning format, and work with interactive materials.
Christine Batruch separately noted the uniqueness of the new intake and presented a special module dedicated to the principles of responsible reconstruction — with a focus on people, the environment, and the economy.
This year's innovation was the creation of the Women Leadership Program Council, which includes graduates of previous years. They shared their own experience and advice for the participants of the third cohort.
Notably, requests to participate in the program began arriving as early as the beginning of the year, which confirms its relevance and high demand among society and the women leaders of today.
Ahead of the participants lies intensive study, growth, and new challenges. We wish them to make the most of the program's opportunities, to form clear goals, and to implement projects that will contribute to the reconstruction and development of Ukraine.

From Lab to Market: Stockholm School of Economics Professor Speaks at ReinforceUA

Valentina Tartari studies how knowledge travels from university laboratories into companies and society. On 11 November 2026, the Stockholm School of Economics professor will share that perspective in an online lecture, “From Lab to Market: Turning Knowledge into Innovation and Business”.
This is the second lecture in the second ReinforceUA series, run in partnership with the Academy of Management, one of the world’s largest communities of management scholars. The series opened on 28 October with Christopher Tucci, President of the Academy of Management and Professor at Imperial Business School, who spoke about how businesses can withstand AI-driven disruption. The new lecture turns to another side of innovation: where the ideas that later become products and companies actually come from.
Valentina Tartari is the Jacob and Marcus Wallenberg Professor of Innovative and Sustainable Business Development at the House of Innovation, Stockholm School of Economics, and Director of the Jacob and Marcus Wallenberg Center for Innovative and Sustainable Business Development. She is also affiliated with the Department of Strategy and Innovation at Copenhagen Business School. She holds a PhD in Management of Innovation from Imperial College London and BSc and MSc degrees in Economics from Bocconi University, both cum laude.
Her research examines how academic researchers produce scientific knowledge, how that knowledge reaches industry and society, and the role universities play in stimulating local entrepreneurship. Her work has appeared in the Academy of Management Journal, Research Policy and the Journal of Management Studies. She is Division Chair-Elect of the Technology and Innovation Management Division of the Academy of Management and serves on the editorial boards of Research Policy and Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal.
For companies looking for new sources of growth, the topic is highly practical. More and more firms see researchers, technology teams and universities as partners. This lecture offers a researcher’s view of how that path works across different countries.
Registration is required
ReinforceUA is an educational project of MIM-Kyiv Business School. Since 2022 it has brought lectures by leading international management thinkers to Ukrainian audiences, with past speakers including Amy Edmondson, Roger Martin and Philip Kotler. The next lectures in the series are scheduled for 25 November and 9 December.

The lecture takes place on Zoom at 18:00 Kyiv time (GMT+2), in English with live Ukrainian subtitles. Participation is free for everyone
