MIM Business School hosted a meeting between <a href="https://mim.kyiv.ua/programs/se-mba">Senior Executive MBA </a> students and Serhiy Prytula - prominent Ukrainian volunteer, public figure, and founder of the Prytula Charitable Foundation.
The discussion focused on how charitable organizations and foundations operate: how they function, what problems they address, and what challenges they face.
Students had no shortage of questions - covering everything from the foundation's origins and structure to staffing, beneficiary selection, and day-to-day operations.
In his responses, Serhiy Prytula highlighted several important points. He emphasized the unique nature of the Ukrainian volunteer movement: "The Ukrainian volunteer movement has no parallel in the world. It is not a competition - it is a philosophy of synergy. That is why it is being actively studied internationally." He also cited a Yale University research project examining the Ukrainian volunteering experience as one example.
On the foundation's structure, he noted that it was launched in July 2020 with three people - the founder, a director, and an accountant - and within a year and a half had completed over 50 humanitarian projects. After the full-scale invasion began, the team grew to more than 200 volunteers across Ukraine and abroad.
On the challenges of growth, Prytula noted that in the early days everyone worked without pay, which eventually led to people leaving. The foundation then began actively engaging the business community and secured support from more than 20 companies. Over time, its structure came to resemble a business organization, with defined departments and clear lines of accountability. In 2023, Andriy Shuvalov - a MIM Business School alumnus who had risen from manager to department head - took over as director. Under his leadership, the foundation finalized its current structure of 11 departments, opened a branch in Lviv, a logistics hub in Dnipro, and a humanitarian hub in Mykolaiv. Prytula spoke candidly about the difficulty of not only retaining a highly motivated team but transforming it into a highly skilled one.
A key strategic decision came in 2024, when the foundation split its operations into two legal entities: a military fund supporting the armed forces, and a humanitarian fund focused on schools, hospitals, and bomb shelters.
A new chapter opened in September 2024 with the launch of the foundation's own training programs for interceptor drone operators, graduating new crews every two weeks.
The meeting with Serhiy Prytula was a vivid demonstration of how volunteer work can evolve into a structured, strategically driven operation. For SE MBA students, it was a rare opportunity to see management and leadership principles at work in real conditions - under the pressures of war and constant uncertainty.
Worth noting: the foundation's leadership is already developing a post-victory strategy. In Prytula's own words:

"We often get asked: what happens to the foundation after victory? For me, the answer is clear - we are not going anywhere. The focus will shift, but the core will remain: helping people and communities. We already have experience in humanitarian projects, supporting hospitals, schools, and bomb shelters. After the war, the foundation will work on rebuilding the country, developing infrastructure, and supporting those in need. Volunteering is not a temporary phenomenon - it is a philosophy, and we will carry it forward."
