The discussion focused on this pressing and urgent issue, during which the speakers, together with the event participants, sought answers to the following questions: how to attract young people, what helps to retain them, and what kind of environment needs to be created so that young people want to stay, work, and thrive in Ukraine.
The panel discussion featured the following participants:
Nadiyi Omelchenko - moderator, lecturer at the MIM Business School, founder of the “Educational Initiatives” Charitable Foundation, businesswoman
Yanina Voitsekhovska - independent HR expert
Natalia Slynko - CEO and owner of the recruitment company Talent Match
Dmytro Karpenko - General Manager of Fillin Ukraine
Oleksandr Sanchenko - Member of the Ukrainian Parliament, Co-Chair of the Presidential Council on Youth Affairs
The discussion began with the key question: what really matters to young people today? The speakers unanimously agreed that salary has long ceased to be the deciding factor. It is important for young people to feel they are growing, to gain new knowledge, to feel connected to the company, and to feel valued. They want to leave work with a smile and are definitely not ready to work within the traditional “boss-subordinate” model.
Natalia Slynko noted that young people take a much more holistic view of life: they need not only financial security but also mental and physical well-being. And it is important for businesses to realize that competition for talent now takes place not between companies in the same city - but between countries.
Yanina Voitsekhovska emphasized that young people are very sensitive to recognition: praise, honest feedback, and attention to results are part of what motivates them.
Moderator Nadiia Omelchenko posed a difficult question: Can an employer sustain this “honeymoon” indefinitely - when everything is flexible, comfortable, and supportive? After all, for Gen Z, this is no longer a bonus but the new norm.
Dmytro Karpenko responded: companies truly need to build a healthy working environment. It’s not easy or cheap, but that’s exactly what pays off in the long run. And while not all companies are ready to invest in such an environment, one thing became clear: young people’s high expectations aren’t a problem - they’re an opportunity.
Stability and the role of parents were also discussed. Nadiia Omelchenko pointed out a paradox: young people want stability, but in their search for it, they often… quit their jobs.
Natalia Slynko added that parents still have a significant influence on their children’s choices, so when they see a future in Ukraine, they prepare their children to build a career here.
Oleksandr Sanchenko raised the topic of education: a significant portion of young people choose higher education not out of a sense of calling, but because “that’s what their parents decided.” However, this is a heavy burden on the state budget when a specialist ultimately does not work in their field. That is why he emphasized the importance of early career guidance and the need to give children the opportunity to recognize their talents and abilities while still in school. He also highlighted the importance of affordable housing and infrastructure - elements that create a comfortable living environment both after work and on weekends.
Dmytro Karpenko provided interesting statistics: 47% of young people see no point in higher education. And the “funding follows the student” project, according to Oleksandr Sanchenko, encountered resistance from universities - after all, it involves competition, for which not everyone is ready.
The discussion turned to the question: When do young people start taking control of their own lives?
Participants had different answers: when they start earning their own money, when they move out of their parents’ home, or when their parents allow them to earn their first income while still in school.
They also talked about “jumping” between careers. This is part of the journey of self-discovery, but it’s important to remember: developing skills takes time. Although, as the speakers noted, there are quite a few young people who have already launched their own projects and businesses - young people are very diverse, and that is their strength.
Dmytro Karpenko emphasized: young people aren’t the problem. They simply know themselves better and have a clearer sense of their limits.
Yanina Voitsekhovska reminded us that we must listen to young people and keep our promises. If you promised something, follow through. For young people, a broken promise is a red line.
In closing, Nadiia Omelchenko said: young people are our hope. When we speak of them, we speak of Ukraine’s future.
The discussion was lively and filled with questions, case studies, and advice. Participants were actively involved, sharing their experiences and seeking solutions. This shows that the topic is truly pressing and important - and this discussion certainly won’t be the last.
