Mothers of children with disabilities possess unique strengths that employers can leverage if they adopt flexible and understanding approaches. In a tight labor market where demand outstrips supply, every skilled worker is invaluable. Niya Nickel, founder of the Epiprosvita NGO, owner of the Kolorova hair dye brand, founder of the Pryton Krasy beauty studio, and a graduate of MIM, discussed on MIM-TV the types of jobs these women can excel at, the myths that should be dispelled, and key focus areas. Nickel, who is raising a daughter with a rare genetic disease, has used her personal experience to advocate for systemic changes, particularly in the employment of women facing similar challenges. Here are some selected insights from the conversation.
The current labor market in Ukraine has more than 100,000 open vacancies, setting a historic record and indicating a major hiring crisis. This situation necessitates exploring untapped categories of employees. Discussions about actively involving veterans in the workforce should also include mothers of children with disabilities. Nickel asserts that at the onset of the war, three groups were exceptionally prepared: healthcare workers, due to their experience with COVID-19, the military and emergency services, and mothers of children with disabilities, who have been enduring their own personal battles since their children diagnosis. These mothers have adapted remarkably to various stresses.
Contrary to the belief that these mothers are difficult to work with due to potential distractions and constant suffering, Nickel highlights their exceptional multitasking abilities. For instance, a collaboration with WeLabelData employed these mothers to label videos for neural networks—a monotonous job with high staff turnover. The mothers found this work calming and saw it as a first step towards overcoming their fears of working with computers, eventually enabling them to pursue further development.
Endurance is another significant strength of these mothers. They exhibit incredible resilience in their tasks and often prefer being supervised. Many mothers shared in interviews that they constantly make difficult decisions, often acting as full-time physicians, managers, and cleaners at home. Work, therefore, becomes a form of respite where someone else provides direction.
Inflexible companies risk becoming obsolete. The significant labor and skills shortages mean that adaptability is now a critical challenge for companies. This flexibility is particularly important for online work. At Nickel's ventures, all designers, copywriters, and project managers are mothers of children with disabilities. They operate on flexible schedules, working whenever possible, with the primary focus on task completion.
Many mothers work at night while caring for their children during the day. It sounds painful, but children with disabilities have very limited time in this world. Thus, many prefer spending precious time with their children when they are in a good mood and working undisturbed at night. This flexibility not only benefits the mother but also ensures that she remains motivated and productive.
