Great things are usually done slowly. A lot of time is spent on preparation, and only then, over time, does the cumulative effect produce results. Halyna Chyburovska, a 2009 MBA graduate who was caught up in the war while preparing an art project in Zhytomyr, headed the city's Volunteer Headquarters at the beginning of the full-scale invasion to help establish humanitarian and security processes. However, the idea of developing the cultural component did not go away, and in late 2022 and early 2023, she presented her idea for a contemporary art park to Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, who came to Ukraine to give an open lecture. He is known for using non-traditional materials such as bamboo, paper, fabric, plastic, and environmentally friendly technologies in his projects. In addition, Shigeru Ban has implemented low-cost housing projects for people who have been left homeless by global upheavals - in refugee camps in Rwanda, during earthquakes in Japan, Turkey, India, and Haiti. And now the architect is interested in the idea of a cultural space in Zhytomyr.
The creation of the Contemporary Art Park, which would include a concert hall, an art gallery shelter, and a park area, was prompted by the full-scale invasion. Then, having just recovered from the challenges of the full-scale offensive, the local academic theater company asked for a space to rehearse and perform. And all the local authorities could give them was an old bomb shelter with abandoned communications, built 60 years ago, which volunteers adapted to provide safety for the townspeople.
It became clear that during the war, people were in even greater need of cultural events that could be attended in protected spaces. This is how an initiative group was formed to create such a space, led by Halyna Chyburovska and consisting of three young architects and several activists.
The idea also contains a powerful emotion and is fed by it. In February of this year, Halyna Chyburovska visited Japan as part of a delegation of Ukrainian mayors and presented her idea at the Business Forum on the Economic Recovery of Ukraine. The project's ambassador, Ilya Bondarenko, a Ukrainian violinist and composer already known in Japan, came to the presentation. In March 2022, the prominent Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto presented Ilya Bondarenko with a piece called "Dedication to Ilya," which became a creative expression of the Japanese artist's sympathy and support for the Ukrainian people. A video of the performance of this melody on the ruins of Zhytomyr Lyceum No. 25, which was hit by a Russian missile, went viral, helping to raise funds to help Ukraine.  
How are the plans for the Park going forward? Today, the team continues to take small steps towards the goal: they are looking for consultants and experts to develop a design solution for a concert hall and art gallery that would also serve as a bomb shelter. And, of course, they invite people from different fields to join as ambassadors to help spread the word about the project and help find partnerships. "We understand that public money will be spent on priority needs such as housing, hospitals, and healthcare. Therefore, we know that cultural foundations and patrons interested in this topic can support an art project during the war," says Halyna Chyburovska.
Currently, the Park of Contemporary Art project is participating in the IRS initiative's 100 Ideas for Cities Hackathon, the results of which will be announced on September 30 this year. The organizers of the Hackathon assure that the number of votes on social media will affect the final result.
